The Story of Milagrosa: Her family thought she was dead, but they were wrong

2013-11-23

The story of Milagrosa is the story that involves 23 Spanish youths and a eleven year-old girl from Equatorial Guinea. The group met her last summer in a summer camp. Now, it's collecting money to pay for her surgery. They may be asking for the impossible, but then again, her name literally means 'miracle.'

"Her mother had a miscarriage when she was about five months pregnant. That day it was pouring, so they placed the dead baby in a plastic bag. The next morning, they went out to bury it, but they realized that something was moving... They opened the bag and found that the baby girl was still alive. They managed to make an incubator with hot water pots and kept her there for nine months. The baby grew outside her mother's womb, because she was born without  fully developed eyes, mouth or ears.”

To the surprise of everyone, Milagrosa survived. Her grandmother still gets emotional when she remembers how such a premature baby had the will to live.

"I slept like this, touching the pots to make sure they were still warm. I would get up and use this same oven to warm water for her.”

Milagrosa is healthy, but she can't walk. When she was born, her legs were still bound together. She underwent surgery to divide her extremities, but she needs yet another operation to stand up and eventually walk. The surgery can't be done in Equatorial Guinea and her family can't pay for any treatment. But despite these challenges, Milagrosa seems to always have a smile on her face

"It was stunning to see that the same girl that couldn't walk, that couldn't leave her house, that had no friends and couldn't go to school, could live with such joy and enthusiasm.”

"She is a extremely happy girl that is always trying to go beyond her limits. She is a great example for all of us.”

The group of Spanish youths launched a website, www.unmilagroparamilagrosa.com, to collect money to pay for Milagrosa's surgery. She also has a Facebook profile called "Un milagro para Milagrosa” where she receives a lot support. They're hopeful that a second miracle will soon come true for Milagrosa.
