Vatican comments on situation of missing Chinese Bishop Shao Zhumin

June 26, 2017. Bishop Peter Shao Zhumin, from Wenzhou in Continental China, was taken into custody by Chinese police on Easter weekend 2017. While recognized as a bishop in the Catholic Church, he is an unofficial bishop or "underground” in China, since the Chinese government does not recognize him as religious.

New secretary of the Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life

May 31, 2017. The Brazilian priest Alexandre Awi Mello, the National Director of Brazil's Schönstatt Movement, will serve as the new secretary. He was born Rio de Janeiro in 1971, and ordained a priest in 2001.

Vladimir Putin made his way to the Vatican on Monday afternoon, to meet with Pope Francis at the Vatican's Apostolic Palace. During their 35 minute meeting the Pope urged Vladimir Putin to protect human dignity. As a gift, the president gave the Pope an Byzantine icon of Our Lady of Tenderness. 

Even though this is the first time both leaders have directly met, they had addressed each-other before. At the start of the G20 summit in Russia, the Pope sent a letter to Putin, urging world leaders to not respond to the Syrian crisis with military action. In Putin's open letter to the New York Times, the president highlighted the Pope's call to set weapons aside. 

Putin met with Benedict XVI in 2007 and with John Paul II, twice, in the year 2000 and again in 2003.
