Spanish Cardinal Ricardo María Carles passed away at the age of 87 on Tuesday morning in northwestern Spain. He suffered a stroke on Monday and had to be rushed to the hospital in the city of Tortosa, where he lived since 2004.
Before his retirement Card. Carles served as the Archbishop of Barcelona. In his lifetime he took part in many sports and performing arts. He also constantly professed his love for his beloved Valencia, the region where he was born in 1926.
With his death, there are now 199 members in the College of Cardinals. Card. Carles Gordó did not take part in the 2013 conclave because he was over 80 years old.
