Cardinal Pell inaugurates Christmas light show at Australia's main cathedral

2013-12-26

For Catholics in Sydney, Christmas is incomplete without the spectacular light show that adorns its most important church, St. Mary's Cathedral.

The centuries old building transforms into a canvas. It depicts the images of the story of the birth of Jesus: from the Mary and Joseph's journey, to the arrival of the Three Wise Men following the Star of Bethlehem.

But that's not all. The lights show also features Santa riding on his sleigh, and ends with several famous painting of the Madonna holding Baby Jesus.

The display is made possible by 14 large projectors shooting laser lights at the facade of the Cathedral.

The Archdiocese of Sydney has the show on every night, repeating itself every 14 minutes. In addition to the lights show, they've set up an outdoor Nativity scene and choir shows.
