'One of Us' creates network for the defense of life in Europe

2014-01-02

One of Us will continue defending the right to life. The popular initiative to protect human embryos that gathered over 2 million signatures will now become a network. Its organizers will join together all the groups working to defend live within the European Union.

"It's an example of how a population made up of so many Christians, but also so many Muslims; so many people that do not have the gift of faith, they don't believe in a higher being, but they believe science in this case. They agree with the concept that life begins after conception. It has gained tremendous success.”

In 2011, a ruling from the European Court of Human Rights paved the way to make that official. It would outlaw the biomedical use of human embryos for research patents. The ruling set in motion the One of Us campaign, to cut off European taxpayers' funding of experiments with human embryos.  The campaign collected and exceed the needed signatures, but now they're being verified. The European Commission could take up debate on the proposal by February.

"We hope they take action because we've got the results and the will, this popular sentiment in Europe. It's a clear signal, from the European people, and even the ruling from the Brüstle case at the Luxembourg court. Today, the judiciary and popular opinion agree on one simple thing: life begins at conception. And the Commission cannot use our money to fund experiments that murder human embryos.”

All of the signatures were collected in 28 countries, over the past year. Organizers say the overwhelming response shows that they must continue this European movement to defend life in all its stages.
