Cardinal Re turns 80, cardinal electors down to 106

2014-01-30

Italian Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, turned 80 years old on Thursday, making him ineligible to vote in an eventual conclave.

For years, he served as Deputy Secretary of State, which is basically the number three post in the Curia. Working abroad, he served in Panama and Iran. He was also the prefect of the Congregation for Bishops and president of the Pontifical Council for Latin America.

During the last conclave, Cardinal Re, as the Vice-Dean, asked the new Pope what name he had chosen.

Currently the number of cardinal electors stands at 106. But on February 22nd, a consistory will take place, and Pope Francis will add another 16 cardinals to the list. At that point there will be 122 cardinals with the right to vote in a conclave.
