Saint Peter's says goodbye to its Christmas Tree and Nativity Scene

They have attracted thousands of glances and photographs in the last month at the Vatican, but now it's all coming to an end. Workers have begun to take down the Nativity Scene and Christmas Tree in St. Peter's Square.

In front of surprised passers-by, they cut the branches of the 80 feet tall Bavarian fir tree, and also dismanteled the Napolitan Nativity scene.

"It only takes a day to get rid of it, but it took more than a year and a half to design it.”

Those who helped set up the Nativity Scene are a bit sad to see it go, but all good things must come to an end.

"It's quite sad to leave the square without it. This  stage is over: that's why it's so sad. We have been here for more than 20 days.”

They still don't know what will happen to the figures of their Nativity Scene, or if they will appear again next year, but are hopeful.

Even though Christmas finished a month ago, the Vatican leaves the Christmas Tree and Nativity Scene until February 2nd, feast of Our Lady of  the Candles
