During the biennial plenary for the Catholic Bishops' Conference of India, members elected Cardinal Baselios Cleemis Thottunkal as their new president.
Card. Baselios Cleemis is the Major Archbishop of Kerala, and leader of the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church, one of the Eastern Orthodox Churches in full communion with Rome.
In his four-year term, he will lead the conference, which groups together the bishops from the three Catholic rites in India: Syro-Malankara, Syro-Malabara, and the Roman rite.
Benedict XVI made him cardinal in February of last year. Card. Baselios Cleemis also took part in the conclave to elect Pope Francis.
