Pope in Angelus: Through baptism we all share the same dignity

2014-02-24

Pope Francis asked for prayers for Church unity and for the new cardinals.

Near the end of his Sunday Angelus, Pope Francis asked for applause for the new cardinals.

POPE FRANCIS
"Can we greet the new cardinals with applause? Let's greet them all.”

Pope Francis explained that the origins of each new cardinal shows off the "Catholicity” of the Church. He asked for prayer for unity.

POPE FRANCIS
"Build this unity because unity is more important than conflict. The unity of the Church is in Christ. I urge you to support these pastors, and sustain them with prayers, so that they may serve the people they have been entrusted with, to show them the tenderness and love of the Lord.”

The Pope also explained that Baptism makes everyone a child of God. Therefore, no person has more dignity than others, despite having more responsibilities.

POPE FRANCIS
"Those who have received the ministry to guide, to preach, to administer the Sacraments, must not feel that they own special powers, that they are masters. They must put themselves in the service of the community.”

He closed off by saying that moments like Saturday's Consistory should strengthen the "faith, love for Christ and for the Church.
