Vatican comments on situation of missing Chinese Bishop Shao Zhumin

June 26, 2017. Bishop Peter Shao Zhumin, from Wenzhou in Continental China, was taken into custody by Chinese police on Easter weekend 2017. President thanks Pope for Church's work in Haiti

Pope Francis welcomed Haitian President Michel Martelly, who was at the Vatican for the creation of Cardinal Chibly Langlois.

During their meeting, the Caribbean head of state thanked the Pope for the "cherished social contribution” from the Church to his country, especially education and healthcare.

Their audience lasted about 20 minutes, and both leaders reaffirmed good ties between Haiti and the Holy See. They also highlighted the reconstruction and reconciliation efforts in the country.

Martelly gave the Pope a bronze dove, as a symbol of peace. Meanwhile, the Pope gave him a French copy of his apostolic exhortation Evangelii Gaudium.
