Pope sends condolences for victims of Turkish cargo jet crash

Legionaries of Christ close off Chapter General

The Chapter General for the Legionaries of Christ ended on Tuesday in Rome, closing off a troubled chapter in the history of the relatively young congregation.

Over the course of several weeks, they elected new leadership, headed by Mexico's Eduardo Robles Gil. They also drafted new constitutions, which must get the Pope's approval before going into effect.

The Legionaries also expressed their dismay and asked for forgiveness on the abuses committed by its founder, and the "inability to believe the victims of Father Maciel.” They added that he would not be presented as a role model, and his personal writings would not be used as guides.

The Chapter General kicked off on January 8. The congregation addressed the changes according to suggestions from the Holy See. With the conclusion of the chapter general, the stewardship of their papal delegate, Card. Velasio De Paolis, also came to an end.
