John Paul II's musical hits Rome!

2014-04-21

It's fair to say that everyone can say something about John Paul II, but it would be a lot more difficult to explain who Karol Wojtyla really was, before becoming Pope

So a new musical titled: Karol Wojtyla: The True Story, sheds light on who this man really was, before all the titles.

PATRIZIA BARSOTTI
Co-author, 'Karol Wojtyla. The True Story'
"Karol Wojtyla and John Paul II cannot be separated: the man and the Pontiff are the same person. His 27 year pontificate was open to the world. He was open to dialogue and overcame all limits. Those years reflect the intense life he lived as Karol Wojtyla.”

The production follows a type of flashback experience, all the way back to John Paul II's childhood, including the loss of his mother and his eldest brother Edmund. Italian actor Alessandro Bendinelli plays the role of young Karol, or as his family called him, Lolek.

ALESSANDRO BENDINELLI
Actor, 'Karol Wojtyla. The True Story'
"He was a boy who had a very, very tough life, but he stayed strong and eventually became Pope. He was loved by everyone and even as a young boy, he was very confident.”

The musical also includes challenging moments he had to overcome. He saw the deportation of his Jewish friends as they were sent to concentration camps. He also experienced the Communist occupation of his native Poland. Moments like these, shaped his character.

PATRIZIA BARSOTTI
Co-author, 'Karol Wojtyla. The True Story'
"I think he lived all moments intensely, even the painful ones. He became a strong and determined man. He would often say, 'take your life and make a masterpiece of it.' I think it's a wonderful message for all the young people who didn't have the chance to personally meet him, but in a way they can understand him through this musical.”

Prestigious artists made the musical come to life. They include, Israelite singer Noa and Italian director Duccio Forzano, Spanish journalist Paloma Gomez Borrero gave advice on the historical facts of the script.
The result is a show where music and dance come together to shed light on the human side of a Pope who never lost hope and never stopped believing.
