These comic strips have made their way across the globe. They show the charming and fun side of St. John Paul II and St. John XXIII. They were designed by the team of Rome's LUMSA college students that handled all the social network sites of the recent canonizations.
"We were thinking about how we could reach out to a younger crowd, who maybe nowadays are all about the smarthphones. So, we decided to create these two characters and have them talk to one another.”
Two were published per day. The first dealt with a theme like justice, youth or peace. The second one dealt with a nightly prayer. It wasn't all that easy, especially when it came to researching the Pope's speeches, prayers and famous quotes.
"I didn't know too much about his famous quotes or even their accomplishments, but thanks to this project, I guess you could say, I received a spiritual boost. I had to read their encyclicals and speeches to write out their conversations and keep them relevant to their true character.”
Even though the canonization is now is now part of history, the account, 2popesaints is still active on facebook, youtube and twitter. In fact the day of the ceremony, they were a worldwide trending topic on Twitter.
"We still see a lot of activity on our pages. We've gotten a lot of followers because of the canonization, and our comic strips have been re-tweeted around the globe.”
A few days ago, they published a cartoon of St. John XXIII talking to St. John Paul II. In the comic strip, they were talking about how happy they were to hear that Pope Paul VI will be beatified in October.
