Presidents of Israel and Palestine meet with Pope Francis, before praying for peace

2014-06-08

At roughly 18.10 pm, Rome time, Israel's President, Shimon Peres arrived to the  Vatican's Casa Santa Marta, where he was welcomed by Pope Francis. They made their way to a residence hall and exchanged a few words before the cameras. They then held a private meeting for a few moments.

About 20 minutes later, at 18.28pm, the President of Palestine, Mahmoud Abbas,  was welcomed by Pope Francis. Together they walked into the same residence hall before holding a brief meeting.

Both presidents then greeted one another, before the Pope, as they made their way to the Vatican Gardens, along with Ecumenical Patriarach, Bartholomew I.

Their arrival marks the beginning of a much anticipated meeting, where Jewish, Christian and Muslim prayers will be said, to pray for peace in the Holy Land.
