Catholic Charities get ready for International AIDS Conference

2014-07-18

Worldwide, it's estimated that the Catholic Church provides 25 percent of the care for people living with HIV. To discuss everything from the best practices to ethical issues, Caritas and other faith based charities, got together to talk about what's working and what can be improved

MSGR. ROBERT VITILLO

"Treatment is not only now to prolong the lives of people and help them to stay in better health, which is a very important element of treatment, but treatment is prevention at the same time.”

The International AIDS Conference is taking place in Melbourne, Australia from July 20th to the 25th. Caritas will be attending, but along with other faith based groups, it decided to hold a three day conference before, in that same city, to touch base and to keep in mind what exactly makes their work unique.

MSGR. ROBERT VITILLO

"We will be focusing a great deal on people’s spiritual needs to see, spiritual needs as an essential element of the overall health of people.”

The three day faith based conference, ran from July 18th to the 20th. Titled Stepping Up the Pace: Remembering the Loaves and Fishes, Msgr. Robert Vitillo, highlighted that their workload is high and their resources low. Still, they find motivation in the multiplication of loaves and fishes, where Jesus encourages his apostles to attend to everyone, despite their limits.

Roughly 25,000 people are expected in the International AIDS Conference, which takes place very two years.

"Scientists, clinicians, social workers, sociologists, psychologists, but also many activists who are advocating for better treatment for people and also advocating against discrimination for people living with HIV.”

Some of the reflections, presentations and discussion points of their meeting will be uploaded on Caritas website- www.caritas.org
