The Pope welcomes the soccer “champions of America”

2014-08-20

This week's General Audience saw the participation of several guests who are very dear to the Pope.

FRANCIS
"In a special way, I would like to greet the champions of America, the team of San Lorenzo, who are present here, which is a part of my cultural identity.”

It's no secret that Pope Francis is a die-hard fan of San Lorenzo de Almagro. While he was in South Korea, his team won the Libertadores Cup of America against the National team of Paraguay. It is a historic victory: it's the first time that San Lorenzo has won the title in its 106 year history.

The players brought their most famous fan the trophy to celebrate.

MATÍAS LAMMENS
President, San Lorenzo de Almagro
"It is a sacrifice that we do gratefully because luckily, it is becoming a beautiful tradition to bring trophies to the Pope, we believe in the energy that he has. Every time someone goes to see Pope Francis they bring something, they learn something, and today was no exception.”

This small joyful moment comes a day after three members of the Pope's family died in a tragic car accident. The club's president says he will return home satisfied because the players "were able to get a smile from the Pope.”
