Cardinal Edmund Szoka passes away at the age of 86

2014-08-21

American Cardinal Edmund Szoka has died. He passed away in Novi, Michigan, at Providence Park Hospital.

He was made a Cardinal by John Paul II in 1988 and was one of his closest confidants. He led the Prefecture of Economic Affairs of the Holy See from 1990 to 1997.

With his death, the number of cardinals drops to 210, but since he was over 80, Szoka had already lost a right to vote, so the number of cardinal electors remains the same, at 117.
