The Vatican marks the 400th anniversary of El Greco's death with a unique stamp

2014-08-31

It's been 400 years since the painter Doménikos Theotokópoulos, commonly known as 'El Greco', passed away. His stylized representations and vivid colors left a mark in the world of art, which commemorates the anniversary of his death.

The Philatelic and Numismatic Office of the Vatican will release a commemorative stamp. It features a portrait of the Greek artist, who was very close to the Popes.

MAURO OLIVIERI
Director, Philatelic and Numismatic Office of the Vatican
"The portrait that appears on the stamp, which is a beautiful face of Christ, is in the Apostolic Palace, in the papal apartments. Although Pope Francis doesn't live there, he receives important guests there and holds international meetings.

No one knows how the 40 centimeter canvas ended up in the Pope's private apartments.

The director of the office recalled that he discovered the painting by chance while waiting for an audience with Pope Francis.

What is certain is that it is a genuine painting by the artist from Crete.

MAURO OLIVIERI
Director, Philatelic and Numismatic Office of the Vatican
"Taking the opportunity for the fourth centenary of his death, we decided to use this painting because it shows the richness, as well as an unknown reality of the Vatican.”

El Greco isn't the only famous person that will be celebrated this year. A series of stamps commemorating the 500th anniversary of the death of the Italian architect Bramante, as well as the 1200th anniversary of Charlemagne's death will be released.
