Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Bishop: People continue to die daily in Ukraine

2014-11-04

This Greek-Catholic bishop has seen continued clashes between the army and Pro-Russian separatists in Eastern Ukraine, despite a September 5th cease fire agreement.

BISHOP KEN NOWAKOWSKI
Bishop of Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy of New Westminster (Canada)
"The conflict still continues and people are dying daily... Perhaps not in the amounts that were prior  to the ceasefire being declared several weeks ago. But estimates show that on the Ukraine inside at least 3,000 people have lost their lives in this war.”

Bishop Ken Nowakowski founded Caritas Ukraine in 1994 and is a close collaborator of the Major Archbishop of the Ukrainian Catholic Church, Sviatoslav Schevchuk.

After spending several days in the country, he is worried about the situation of over 400,000 refugees forced to flee their homes.

BISHOP KEN NOWAKOWSKI
Bishop of Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy of New Westminster (Canada)
"It's important that these people, specially during the winter months, have save places to live, something to eat and that the children are cared for as well.”

The United Nations has placed the number of victims at 331 since the cease fire agreement in September, a number that continues to grow daily.

Bishop Nowakowski believes that violence is not the path and that a lasting peace can only be achieved through dialogue between the Ukraine and Russia.
