Catholic Charity: Adopt an Iraqi Family

2014-11-06

Thousands of Iraqi families have been forced out of their homes by Islamic extremists. Amid the instability, there are two main questions they ask, over and over.

"They say, if we would have been involved in politics, or if we were part of an opposition party we see how this could happen but no...We're average people who worked and lived well. How did this happen? The second question they ask is, what will our future hold?”

Silvio Tessari is the president of the Middle Eastern division of Caritas in Italy. He recently met with Iraqi refugees in Kurdistan. Some have received help, but many still don't have a roof over their heads. That's where a new initiative called Project Home, comes in.

"There's the possibility of giving these families a kind of container or a trailer that's designed for a family. So, among other things, it would have running water and a stove installed.”

Caritas is hoping to purchase 150 containers to house families, at a cost of roughly 3,100 euros per unit. They're hoping those who can contribute will donate. They are also hoping to buy school buses for the refugees.

"The children don't have anything to do. One can maybe deal with this situation for one, two or three months, but eventually this inactivity triggers tension for them and their families. They need to go to school. Since these refugee camps are miles away from each other, we need buses to pick them up and take them to school.”

In the meantime, these refugee families are forced to wait. They know things will never be the same, but they're hoping one day they'll be able to go back home safely.
