The President of Senegal, Macky Sall, met with Pope Francis for the first time at the Vatican.
During the meeting they discussed the contribution of the Church in education, healthcare and its involvement in national reconciliation. Macky Sall has lead since 2012, after tense elections.
Among the issues they discussed was the current crisis in the region. Senegal is one of the poorest countries on the planet. According to the UN, it is in the 163rd place out of 187 countries in development.
The Pope gave him a medallion commemorating his pontificate while the president gave him a painting depicting the local landscape.
During the meeting, the Pope said several words in French although he was assisted by an interpreter.
Macky Sall is also president of a country in which 94% of the population is Muslim and only 5% is Christian.
