Maternity as a Masters: Focusing on the professional skills women develop as mothers

2014-12-13

Some women see motherhood as an obstacle in having a professional career. A new program is out to prove otherwise. It's called Maternity as a Master, and it focuses on how motherhood gives extraordinary tools to women.

Through courses, books and campaigns, it shows why motherhood is the equivalent of acquiring a master's degree. More than anything it highlights that the skill women develop during this time are very valuable to the professional world.

"Skills such as relating to others, the ability to listen, to negotiate, patience. Also, the ability to plan ahead, make changes, manage crisis and establish priorities. Finally, something very important for today's leaders, the ability to help others grow.”

This is not limited to women. For men, having a child is also a source of experience and personal growth.

So Maternity as a Master, wants to dispel the notion that motherhood is not compatible with a successful career. It describes it as an asset rather than a liability.

"This change will come, with or without Maternity as a Master. But I think this is the right time to push. There is a natural network of people who think like us. We are in a time of crisis, where we now understand that the old systems don't work. Thousands of millions of women will enter the workforce in the next ten years, changing it radically. That's why I'm convinced that we are changing the world, that it is the right time, and that it will benefit everyone, not just women.”

The project was born in Italy and now it has a presence in the United States. One of its objectives is to create an international network of support for parents.
