Singing nun Sister Cristina talks about her vocation...and revolution

2014-12-23

Even though she is an unconventional singer, all of her videos have gone viral. Still, Italian nun Sister Cristina Scuccia says her singing is not a  question of showbiz, but rather of faith.

SISTER CRISTINA
"First and foremost, I am a nun. A nun who sings, but a nun after all.”

Sister Cristina decided to take part in the Italian television show "The Voice,” which she eventually won. Her performances got all the attention right from the beginning.

SISTER CRISTINA
"When Ricky Martin came, I remember he told me, 'Hey, you know I came here for you, to meet you!' It is great to see that a nun has reached a place where God usually does not enter. It was huge, even for the writers of the show. They also were very grateful.”

Months after her TV success, she released her first CD, titled "Sister Cristina.” It features her own personal cover of the Madonna hit, "Like a Virgin.”

SISTER CRISTINA
"The song talks about a person who is depressed and whose life changes when is touched by love. I just read it and said: 'Of course! I can use it to explain my history of love with God, since my life changed when the Lord called me!'”

Scuccia, better known as 'Sor Cristina' in Italy, didn't like to pray when she was young. Music help her find her vocation. Actually, she discovered God called her when she played the role of a nun in a musical.

SISTER CRISTINA
"I was playing a girl who helped the poor but who eventually realizes she can't do it anymore alone. So she goes to other girls and asks them if they are willing to leave everything behind for Christ. Even though it was just a musical, I couldn't help asking myself those same question when I wasn't on stage.”

Sister Cristina plans to spend Christmas far from flashes and interviews. She will back to her religious community, where she will be surrounded by the very same nuns that more than a year ago encouraged her to go on stage.

"May the light of Baby Jesus reach the hearts of all of you. Merry Christmas. I deeply hope you all remain faithful and never lose faith in God. Merry Christmas.”
