German Cardinal Josef Becker has died in Rome, at the age of 86.
He was a theologian. Since the late 70's he served as a consultor for the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith, where he worked closely with Benedict XVI.
He also taught at Rome's Gregorian University. He was made a Cardinal later in life, back in April 2012, under the pontificate of Benedict XVI.
In light of his death, Pope Francis sent a telegram to offer his condolences.
With this death, the Council of Cardinals now stands at 207, out of which 110 are eligible to vote in an eventual conclave.
Over the weekend though, the Pope will create new cardinals during a Consistory in the Vatican.
