Archbishop of Aleppo: No one thinks about Syria anymore

2015-02-17

The war in Syria has no solution in sight. Despite constant calls for peace, blood still runs through the streets of cities like Aleppo.

Archbishop Boutros Marayati is the Armenian Catholic archbishop of the city. He notes that what was once a melting pot of cultures and faiths has become a graveyard.

He added that the war has caused another sad phenomenon. The city's people have been unable to work and live a normal lives, plunging them into unprecedented poverty.

"People have begun to lose dignity because all they do is wait for alms. Our people were once free and helped in the parish. But now they wait in line to get water, gas, food, medicine... It's a very dramatic situation and it hurts to watch."

The latest peace talks in Moscow failed. These timid attempts to bring peace to Syria after four years have created sense of abandonment within the public.

"Unfortunately, no one thinks of us here or around the world. And so we are waiting for the day when we can at least seek reconciliation and an agreement that allows us to recover the life we had before. We want to live in peace with our Muslim brothers. "

Marayati is about to return to Syria after participating in a meeting at the Community of Sant'Egidio. As he departed, he said he wished he could invite people to Aleppo, but it isn't the best place in the world right now. Maybe, he continued, the visit will be possible someday.
