Andrea Santoro: Pope Francis reflects on the late priest, who was killed in Turkey

This is the story ROME REPORTS produced back in 2006, on the life and legacy of late Italian priest Andrea Santoro. 

He was killed on February 5, 2006 when a man shot him in the back, while the priest prayed inside his local parish in Trebisonda, Turkey. 

Days later a 16 year-old was arrested after confessing to the crime. He said he attacked the priest as revenge, after a Danish newspaper published an insulting cartoon of prophet  Muhammad.

"A few days before he was murdered in Trabzon, he wrote: 'I am here to live among these people and allow Jesus to do so by lending Him my body. We become able to save only if we offer our own lives. We must take the evil in the world and share the pain, absorbing it into ourselves as Jesus did.'"
