Pope sheds light on the highs and lows of priestly life: There is also 'joyful' exhaustion

2015-04-02

Managing the exhaustion priests feel when they're overwhelmed... This was the theme of the Pope's Chrism Mass on Holy Thursday.

He recognized that fatigue often comes with all the demands of their vocation. Nonetheless, he said, the Lord never tired of being amid the people. On the contrary, it renewed Him.

POPE FRANCIS
"The faithful always give us something to do, unless we hide in our offices or go out in our cars wearing sun glasses. It has nothing to do with those who wear expensive cologne and who look at others from afar and from above.”

He then added that priestly vocations are not about enjoying a lavish lifestyle, but about showing compassion. It's about rejoicing with the newly married couple and mourning with those who just lost a loved one.

POPE FRANCIS
"All these emotions can exhaust the heart of a pastor. For us priests, what happens in the lives of our people is not a news bulletin.”

Only true love, said the Pope, gives rest. What is not truly loved, over time becomes tiresome and eventually it can even be harmful.

One must be aware of evil, boredom and enemies, but also of worldly temptations.

POPE FRANCIS
"Here we are speaking of a weariness associated with 'wanting yet not wanting.' Having given up everything but continuing to yearn for the fleshpots of Egypt, toying with the illusion of being something different.”

The Pope also highlighted that he thinks and prays for tired priests quite often, especially he added, when he himself feels tired

The Chrism Mass is one of the most emblematic celebrations of Holy Week. It's here that the holy oils are blessed, and then used throughout the year to administer the Sacraments.
