Despite the rain, thousands of people packed St. Peter's Square to attend Easter Mass and to hear the traditional Urbi et Orbi blessing the Pope gives from the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica.
In his message, he prayed for peace in the Middle East and Africa. He then called on people of good will to pray for the 148 victims who were killed on Holy Thursday in a Kenyan university. The victims were targeted for being Christian.
"May constant prayer rise up from all people of goodwill for those who lost their lives – I think in particular of the young people who were killed last Thursday at Garissa University College in Kenya –, for all who have been kidnapped, and for those forced to abandon their homes and their dear ones.”
The Pope also expressed support for the nuclear deal with Iran. The Urbi et Obri blessing is reserved for three key occasions: a papal election, Christmas and Easter Sunday.
