2015-04-10

The Pope met with the President of the Republic of Georgia.

"I'm very happy to see you.”

During their meeting, Pope Francis and Giorgi Margvelashvili spoke about what the Church has done in Georgia in terms of educational and charitable contributions.

The delicate situation in the region was also discussed. Both expressed concern and a desire to find a peaceful solution to the conflicts. They also stated it was necessary for all parties to respect international law. The war continues to claim victims in Ukraine. In Georgia, the integration of South Ossetia in the Russian Federation has caused new tensions. The EU believes that this development threatens security and stability in the area.

After the meeting came the traditional exchange of gifts. The president gave the pope two angels carved in stone. Pope Francis gifted him a medallion of St. Martin.

"He covers the poor in his mantle.”

The Pope also gave him a copy of "Evangelii Gaudium” and told the Georgian not forget to pray for him.
