Vatican denounces the mismanagement of land and food in the world

2015-04-21

Some 805 million people go hungry in the world today. Most of them are in developing countries, where 13.5 percent of the population is undernourished. The differences between the first and third world countries are growing. Some data blames mismanagement of resources.

With all this in mind, the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace has published a book about the causes, consequences and possible solutions for the mismanagement of land and food.

CARD. PETER TURKSON
President, Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace
"It means a lot and it means everything because these days the problem has become a little more complicated. It is not just about food security but also about food quality."

Pope Francis never tires of reminding people to respect nature and creation and to defend the weakest. He said this while addressing a nutrition conference last year.

POPE FRANCIS
"The struggle against hunger and malnutrition is hindered by 'market priorities,' the 'primacy of profit.'”

In the book, the authors also ask politicians throughout the world to help address the problem.

MSGR. MARIO TOSO
Secretary, Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace
"Given these problems, what is needed is an international authority to intervene in cases of colonialism and land grabbing.”

TEBALDO VINCIGUERRA
Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace
"It's an opportunity to draw attention to many important challenges related to agriculture and food production development, also with land management and more generally with the resources needed to produce food.”

The entire Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace helped with the new 145-page book. It has been heavily promoted by the Council's president, Cardinal Peter Turkson.
