These children in Nepal, who are victims of last month's earthquake, are likely the latest to join the list of millions of people who have been displaced within their own country.

New data from the United Nations and the Norwegian Refugee Council show that 38 million people were displaced in 2014. That is up from 33 million in 2013.

JAN EGELAND
Norwegian Refugee Council
'It's the third year in row we present record high figures. It cannot continue like this. It's a sign of a world that has fundamental problems in protecting and defending the defenseless.

The displaced are victims of natural disasters, war, drought, famine, political conflicts, or incompetent government. They must leave their homes but lack the resources to leave their country. The Middle East has the most dramatic number of displaced people.

JAN EGELAND
Norwegian Refugee Council
'Syria is the number-one displacement country of this generation now. 7.6 million internally displaced, plus four million refugees outside. 11.6 million, more than 50 percent of the population.

A diverse group of countries is facing this humanitarian tragedy. More than two million have been displaced by persecution by the Islamic State in Iraq. In Nigeria, almost a million have left their homes because of jihadist violence committed by Boko Haram. Chaos in Libya has pushed many to risk their lives crossing the Mediterranean. There are 400,000 internally displaced people in the North Africa country. Ukraine has more than 650,000 refugees from its war. And in El Salvador criminal violence and drug cartels have made almost 300,000 people flee their homes.
