Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle was elected president of Caritas Internationalis. The Filipino cardinal is the organization's first president from Asia.

He said after his election that 'I'm limited in my capacities but with all of you, with the love that Jesus has poured into our hearts and in the name of all of the poor people in the world, I accept this election.

The 57-year-old became a priest in 1982 and was appointed Archbishop of Manila in 2011. Pope Benedict XVI elevated him to cardinal the following year.

He is clearly interested in reaching out to the marginalized. This is what Tagle said to Pope Francis last year during the papal visit to Manila.

CARD. LUIS ANTONIO TAGLE
Archbishop of Manila
'Every Filipino wants to go with you... Not to Rome, but to the peripheries, to the shanties, to prison cells, to hospitals.â?

Caritas is the main charity arm of the Catholic Church. It was founded more than 100 years ago and currently operates in more than 200 countries and territories.
