The Pope has a moving conversation with sick children and their families

2015-06-01

Pope Francis had an emotional meeting with a group of gravely ill children.

"This afternoon, there are many new children. Some are at home, and others are in Heaven.”

This isn't the Pope's first meeting with sick children. He met a similar group at Casa Santa Marta in 2013. This time, the 20 children were accompanied by their families. They were between 7 and 14, but there were also babies like Andrea Maria. His parents said he was fighting against a serious nervous system problem.

"We welcomed this life. We decided after hearing the news that we would stay with this baby and think that this was a good God who gave us Andrea Maria and He alone will decide when to take him.”

With many stories like this, the Pope described the families as heroic. He told them that they embodied the spirit of the Cross.

POPE FRANCIS
"The truth is that I do not know what to say to you, because I have a lot of admiration for your fortitude and bravery.” FLASH  "You small ones are the heroes of the day.”

He said that although he does not have answers for their suffering, he asks for them to trust in God.

POPE FRANCIS
"Do not be afraid to ask, even challenge, the Lord. 'Why?' Perhaps you won't receive an explanation, but the gaze of the Father will give you the strength to keep going.”

Pope Francis applauded their example and said that he felt deeply moved by their emotional testimony.
