Pope in Corpus Christi Mass: The Eucharist is not a prize for the strong

2015-06-04

Rome's Basilica of St. John Lateran is where Pope Francis celebrated Mass to mark the Solemn Feast of Corpus Christi. The Pope said division and evildoing are the two forces that threaten Christian unity.

POPE FRANCIS
"There is a danger, a threat. Division and evildoing.  We separate when we don't follow the Word of God. When we do not embrace fraternity among ourselves. When we compete for the top spots. When we become climbers.”

Not only do so called 'climbers' trigger division, said the Pope. They also run the risk of losing their own faith. Evildoing comes with worshiping worldly powers.

POPE FRANCIS
"Pretending, consuming, putting oneself at the center. But also being competitive, arrogant, unwilling to accept mistakes or seek help.  All these points divide us. It makes us mediocre, lukewarm, dull and pagan Christians.”

The Eucharist is a force against these two threats.  It purifies, unites and breaks away from corruption. He added, it's God's way of allowing a sinful soul to transform itself.

POPE FRANCIS
"This is how we recognize that the Eucharist is not a prize for the strong, but a source of strength  for the weak, for sinners. It's forgiveness, it's the Viaticum that allows us to go forward and move along.”

Towards the end of his Homily, the Pope prayed for persecuted Christians, who cannot celebrate their faith openly.

At the end of the Mass, the traditional procession followed to the Basilica of St. Mary Major, where Pope Francis joined in to continue the prayer.
