Pope on Middle East: It seems like human life is less important than oil

2015-06-15

During a meeting with organizations that help Christians in the Middle East and Eastern Churches, the cardinal Leonardo Sandri discussed what life is like for hundreds of thousands of persecuted Christians.

"Vilified, kidnapped, assassinated for being of Christ.”

The Pope echoed the cardinal's statements with a forceful speech condemning indifference toward the tragedy. He asked people not to have double standards.

POPE FRANCIS
"However, we should make an extra effort to remove those seemingly tacit agreements by which the lives of thousands upon thousands of families-women, men, children, elderly-seem to be less important than oil and weapons. While peace and justice is proclaimed, traffickers of death operating in these lands are tolerated.”

Later, he asked the groups to not stop denouncing crimes against Christians, which attack the dignity of humanity. He also asked that they fight so that young people in places like Eritrea and Ethiopia do not have to take risky voyages in order to find a place where they can have a future.
