Meet the Argentine nun who is taking on organized crime

2015-06-28

Martha Pelloni does not look intimidating. She is short and has a gentle voice. But when she speaks, and her passion is awakened, it quickly becomes clear why she is so influential in Argentina.

By organizing "marches of silence,” Pelloni exposed the truth behind the torture and murder of a young woman in Argentina. The crime was especially egregious because it was carried out by family members of government officials and then covered up.

"I was inspired to go out in the street to seek justice because they were sons of power and money. They could cover up their crime.”

Her method of silent protest has inspired other protests throughout the country. She said it can be more powerful than a loud demonstration.

According to Pelloni, corruption is entrenched in the Argentine system. It hurts the weak and the poor. So what does she hope to do?

"To eradicate social, political, and institutional corruption in the new elections. Because there cannot be security while we have mafia culture entrenched in the system.”

Child trafficking is also a major issue that she has worked on. She opened a "House of Human Rights” in southern Argentina to counter the problem. And the National Stolen Children Network came from her work.

Pope Francis' call to be "in the streets” has inspired her. She said that she seeks to live as Jesus did, healing the people's social problems
