Pope Francis will pray in Saint Peter's Square for thousands of persecuted Christians

2015-07-02

Thousands of people from the Catholic Charismatic Renewal movement will pray for persecuted Christians with Pope Francis in St. Peter's Square. It will be an ecumenical event, because persecutors don't distinguish between different sects of Christianity.

"What the Christians can do for their brothers and sisters in the Orient is the following. First of all is prayer, to pray for the wounded people, for the suffering people, not only Christians but also for all of the region. Secondly to have solidarity through humanitarian aid. I think these two things can help alleviate the suffering of their brothers and sisters in the Orient.”

SALVATORE  MARTÍNEZ
Catholic Charismatic Renewal
"We want to give a voice to those who have lost the right to live, to have a home with their families and live with their loved ones. The right to confess a faith means the capacity to confess it freely.”

The event will last almost three hours, but Pope Francis will only attend the final portion. Before, there will be a special prayer song. Artists like Noa and Andrea Bocelli will perform.

Noa is a Jewish singer who has profound admiration for Pope Francis.

"I really think that he should be an example for world leaders everywhere, because I think that without the intervention of important religious leaders we will not have peace. We can work on the political and the diplomatic level, on the social level, but it is really the religious leaders who must call their constituency and tell them no more war in the name of God, no more hate in the name of God.”

The meeting with the movement will continue on Saturday at Olympic Stadium in Rome, and participants from dozens of countries are expected to come.
