Pope Francis: Parishes with closed doors should be called museums

2015-09-09

Just a few days after calling on European parishes to open their doors to families of refugees, Pope Francis spoke during his general audience about why the Church must be a more open community for all people.

POPE FRANCIS
"Always with open doors. The churches, the parishes, the institutions with closed doors cannot be called churches, they must be called museums.”

Pope Francis explained that the Church founded by Christ was a community that welcomed people of all classes and conditions. Jesus was a friend to all, he said, from sinners and sick people to the apostles.

POPE FRANCIS
"That is the Church. It does not want to be a sect for the privileged, but instead a hospitable family, a house where everyone, without exception, can be welcomed and loved.”

Broken families also received a message from Pope Francis, who said there was a place for them in the Church. He added that it was urgent to reform the relationship between parishes and families.

POPE FRANCIS
"Today this is a crucial alliance. Against the centers of power, ideology, finance, and politics, we put our hopes in these centers of love.”

In order for families to feel more welcome in the Church, Pope Francis said that the Christian community must try to improve overly managerial attitudes and instead focus on interpersonal dialogue and respect.
