Pilgrims from Louisiana come to Rome to see Pope Francis, and to be less cradle Catholics

2015-10-25

Arriving in Italy, just one day before, this group of pilgrims began their trip by attending Pope Francis' general audience. They couldn't have been more excited.

FR. JASON PALERMO
Diocese of Baton Rouge (Louisiana)
"Of course, there is always a great sense of excitement whenever you see the Holy Father up close, since he is the successor of Peter. And he's a very photogenic Pope and it's always great to see a Holy Father who embraces people, especially children.”

Father Palermo believes coming to Italy and experiencing their faith in Rome is important, especially for cradle Catholics.

FR. JASON PALERMO
Diocese of Baton Rouge (Louisiana)
"Catholicism in Louisiana is kind of a cradle religion. Half of our population in south Louisiana is Catholic, so it is always good to bring Catholics outside of Louisiana to see the faith from a universal perspective so that people can go back and evangelize so that others can be better Catholics, not just cradle Catholics, but to learn more about the faith outside of just Louisiana.”

After the audience, they continued their pilgrimage, visiting sites in Rome and other Italian cities. They hope to bring back what they experienced to the people of their home diocese.
