Stakes higher for refugees as winter approaches

2015-10-28

While violence and civil war are directly causing hardship in Iraq and Syria, another dynamic isn't helping: the weather.

The United Nations Refugee Agency is warning that as winter approaches, millions of displaced Iraqis and Syrians will be under more pressure than ever. And given how the war has dragged on, it makes it even more difficult to survive.

MELISSA FLEMING
United Nations Refugee Agency
"Today, refugees are now more vulnerable than ever: their savings long gone, their jewelry and other valuables sold off, increasing numbers mired in debt and have barely enough to cover basic needs. They are skipping meals, begging, pulling children out of school, or resorting to high risk or degrading jobs.”

While winter is another great difficulty on top of all the ones they already face, it's not a new one. This will be the fifth winter since the start of Syria's years-long civil war.
