Insight into the UN Campaign for Global Road Safety that the Pope has joined

2016-01-15

The "Save Kids Lives” campaign was launched during the Third United Nations Global Road Safety Week in May of 2015 and is now calling for Governments worldwide to respond.

The campaign has amassed the support of many world leaders and figures, including Pope Francis, who took the opportunity to contribute to the cause while meeting with the president of FIA Jean Todt, yesterday.

CHRISTIAN FRIIS
United Nations Economic Commission for Europe
"To have him support the cause to save lives on our roads was the biggest push we could get for this campaign and it will help us to save millions of lives in the coming decade.”

Road traffic crashes are a leading cause of death for children under 18 years of age. Around 186,300 children lose their lives in road traffic crashes around the world each year.

French director Luc Besson teams up with road safety campaigners from across the world to produce a film about child road safety. The plan is to ensure safety on the roads by providing different types of roads for their designated space; and enhancing roads and vehicle designs.

The next Global High Level Conference on Road Safety will be held in Brazil on November 17, 2016
