A documentary shows in 3D the beauty of the four papal basilicas of Rome

2016-03-13

Michelangelo, Bernini, Borromini... The best way to appreciate their art is to walk the streets and visit the churches of Rome. But there is also another way: watching  the documentary "Saint Peter’s and the papal basilicas of Rome”, a joint production of the Vatican Television Center and Sky TV with exclusive video in three dimensions.

The four basilicas, St. Peter’s, St. John Lateran, St. Mary Major and St. Paul’s Outside the Walls, are seen from a unique perspective, both inside and outside. The 90 minute documentary features a collection of in depth descriptions of each basilica from the top experts in charge.

"One of the first thing visitors to Rome do is visiting St. Peter’s square".

During the documentary, every visit is accompanied with fragments of the book "Walks in Rome” by Stendhal. According to the producers, the result is spectacular.

COSETTA LAGANI
Director of Sky 3D
"There is an image which viewers of the film will never forget, and that is the perpendicular view of the dome of St. Peter’s by Michelangelo seen up close in 3D. But there are many other images in St. Peter’s, such as the Pietà filmed in every detail, where St. Peter is buried and the old graffitti pilgrims left on the tomb."

The documentary film also shows aerial images of Rome leading the viewer from the basilica to the next one, as if on an aerial pilgrimage.

The shooting lasted two weeks and took place when the basilicas had fewer visitors.

COSETTA LAGANI
Director of Sky 3D
"Another great exclusive in this production is that the viewer has the privilege of visiting in a solitary quiet way these four great basilicas.”

This project stems from the success they had with others filmed in 3D, such as the Shroud of Turin, the canonization of John Paul II and the Uffizi Gallery in Florence.

The documentary will be released in April in Italian movie theaters and soon afterwards in America and the rest of Europe.
