It's official: Junipero Serra is now a Saint


(-VIDEO ONLY-) Pope Francis has canonized Junipero Serra, on the second day of his visit in the U.S. 

The Franciscan missionary left his native Spain to evangelize in the Americas. He is know for evangelizing to indigenous communities in California, back in the 18th century. His statue stands high on Capitol Hill in Washington D.C. 

A second miracle was not necessary for him to be declared a saint, for Pope Francis approved a so called 'equipollent canonization' to raise the Spanish missionary to the altars.
