Pope praises Mercedarians for their historic work of redemption of captive Christians

2016-05-02

On Monday, Pope Francis received  the participants in the General Chapter of The Order of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mercy also known as the Mercedarian Order, which will soon be celebrating their 800th Jubilee of the orders founding.

The order was started by Saint Peter Nolasco in 1218. They set to redeem the captive Christians from Muslims. Therefore, in addition to the three traditional vows of poverty, obedience and chastity, add a fourth vow of redemption.

Pope Francis highlighted their work throughout history.

POPE FRANCIS
"A memory that evokes the great deeds accomplished in eight centuries: the work of the redemption of captives, the bold mission to the new world and so many illustrious members by merit and piety that adorn the story. There is much remember, and makes us remember.”

The Pope asked them not to be alone with the past but strive to adapt to the future and to serve the people and, especially, go to the peripheries.
