Pope begins his trip to Armenia with a reflection on Brexit

2016-06-24

Pope Francis' plane arrived in Armenia, the first Christian nation in history, shortly before 3 pm, local time.

There were no crowds at the airport, but as soon as Pope Francis walked down the stairs, he was greeted by an enchanting Armenian folk song sung by a children's choir.

These two children were among the first to greet him. They gave him bread and salt as a welcome.

The Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan also greeted him.

And instead of a handshake, the Pope greeted the Patriarch of the Armenian Apostolic Church Karekin II in a very particular manner.

There were no speeches, so after listening to the hymns Pope greeted the Armenian official delegation. While on the plane, before landing in Armenia, the Pope commented on the referendum by which the UK has decided to leave the European Union.

He said that "it is the will expressed by the people that require a great responsibility from us.”
