Pope condemns "the horror and absurd violence" after attack on church in France

2016-07-26

The Pope shares in the pain and horror of this absurd violence, and expresses his condemnation of any radical form of hatred. He also prays for those affected.

This is the message that the Vatican has transmitted for the attack committed today in the church of Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray, in France. The pastor, Fr. Jacques Hamel, who was 84 years old was killed, and four other people are wounded.

Vatican spokesman, Federico Lombardi, says the Vatican is especially affected by "the barbarous murder of a priest," and that this "horrific” violence took place in a church, "a sacred place where the love of God is announced.”

The Vatican also express their closeness to the Church of France, and especially to the Archdiocese of Rouen, their community and to all the French people.
