The Holy See could become a major player in resolving the crisis in Venezuela

2016-09-15

Last July, the Union of South American Nations wrote to the Vatican to ask for their collaboration to solve the crisis in Venezuela.

The Holy See might become part of a special diplomatic group whose purpose would be to help government and opposition engage in a stable and constructive dialogue.

The Vatican Secretary of State, Pietro Parolin, said that the Holy See would be willing to do so only if both sides show that they have firmly taken the path of dialogue and only if they personally ask for the Vatican's assistance.

The Union of South American Nations is the institution that is acting as a moderator in the process and on its website published the Vatican's response.

The level of social unrest in Venezuela is deep seeded and has given free rein to violence. Homicides accounted for 12 percent of the total mortality rate in the country.
