The story of the Spanish saint-to-be, the “Bishop of the abandoned tabernacle”

2016-10-11

Born in Seville, Spain, in 1877, he was known as the "Bishop of the abandoned tabernacle,” and he is also the founder of the "Eucharistic Missionaries of Nazareth.”

Two members of this congregation tell us all about this relatively unknown figure which will soon be made a saint.

SR. MARÍA TERESA CASTELLÓ
Eucharistic Missionaries of Nazareth
"He arrives at this town, and he finds that in front of the tabernacle, in the church, there is no one. There he realizes that Jesus came to give us life, He is in the Eucharist, but we have abandoned Him. That is why he says he wants to be the 'Bishop of the abandoned tabernacle.'”

He coined an expression that describes his ultimate goal in life: to "eucharistize” the world. To fulfill that goal, he founded the Eucharistic Missionaries of Nazareth.

SR. MÓNICA MARÍA YUAN
Eucharistic Missionaries of Nazareth
"He talks about the importance of realizing that God loves us and that He is alive in every tabernacle, always in the Eucharist. Our mission is therefore to help people discover this, the gift God is giving us every instant, in every Mass, in every tabernacle. Everything we do leads to that.”

Manuel González is being canonized after his intercession was proven in a miraculous healing, but according to Sr. Mónica and Sr. María his legacy goes far beyond, as a way for the world to be a witness of his unwavering faith in God.

SR. MÓNICA MARÍA YUAN
Eucharistic Missionaries of Nazareth
"What we can learn from him is that we are not alone. That God is always with us and on our side. No matter how poor or miserable we are. Even when we abandon him, when we walk away... He is never going to leave our side.”

Manuel González will be canonized on October 16 along with six other blesseds, who will all be enrolled in the canon of saints by Pope Francis.
