Vatican congratulates Trump and hopes his time in office "can truly be fruitful"

2016-11-09

While speaking to Vatican Radio, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican Secretary of State, congratulated the new president and hoped that his government "can truly be fruitful."

FULL STATEMENT:

"I think, first of all, we respectly note the will expressed by the American people, in this exercise of democracy that, as I've heard, was also characterized by a large turnout.

As such, we send best wishes to the new president, so his time in office and government can truly be fruitful.

Be assured of our prayers, so the Lord enlightens and sustains him in the service of his country, of course, but also for well-being and peace in the world.

I believe that today there is indeed a need for everyone to work to change the situation in the world, which is a serious laceration, a severe conflict."
