Pope Francis has made a 50,000 Euro donation to the Greek island of Lesbos following a 6.3 magnitude earthquake on June 12.

Msgr. Massimo Catterin, the chargé d'affaires of the Nunciature, issued a statement regarding the Holy Father's actions: 'it is an unexpected donation and concrete sign of the closeness and affection of [Pope] Francis for the population.â?

It also is a symbol of ecumenism, as the majority of the population is Orthodox, with only 50 Catholics residing on the island.
